The "Super" Nghi Son 2 BOT thermal power project with a total investment of 2.8 billion USD has officially come into commercial operation. This is the second largest foreign investment project in Thanh Hoa.

On the afternoon of August 28, at Nghi Son Economic Zone, the Management Board of Nghi Son Economic Zone and industrial parks of Thanh Hoa province coordinated with Nghi Son 2 Power Company Limited held an inauguration ceremony and commercial operation of Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant.

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc; Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central  Committee, Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court Nguyen Hoa Binh; Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh; leaders of ministries, central branches, leaders of Thanh Hoa province; Japanese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Vietnam; Mr. Min Moon Ki – Commercial Attaché of the Korean Embassy in Vietnam; Mr. Sriotide Marbun – Representatives of the Indonesian Embassy in Vietnam attended this important event.

Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant has a design capacity of 1,200 MW, which is "Super" project with a total investment capital of nearly 2.8 billion USD. The project was assigned by the Vietnamese Government to Nghi Son 2 Power Company Limited (NS2PC) as the investor. This is the second largest FDI project in Thanh Hoa province by a joint venture: KEPCO Electric Power Corporation (Korea) contributes 50%; Marubeni Group (Japan) contributes 40% and Tohuku Electric Company (Japan) contributes 10%. Invested in the form of Build - Operate – Transfer (BOT), the project will be handed over to Vietnam Electricity after 25 years of operation.

The project started in 2018, and by January 2022, Unit 1 was put into operation and was successfully connected to the 500 KV North - South line, connecting to the national power grid. By July 2022, unit No. 2 will be completed connecting to the national power grid on the 500 KV North - South line, bringing an additional 7.8 billion kWh of electricity from Nghi Son across the country, meeting the electricity needs of production, business and daily using of about 6 million households.

Speaking at the inauguration and commercial operation of Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant, Mr. Hirohide Sagara, President & CEO of NS2PC, said that Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant is one of the few thermal power plants in Vietnam using the supercritical technology (USC). This technology allows to optimize the material and to reduce emissions, in accordance with international standards as well as Vietnamese standards. The project will start operating this plant according to "green" criteria, contributing to the successful implementation of the goal of reducing net emissions to zero by 2050 that the Vietnamese Government committed to at COP26.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh confirmed that Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant is the result of good cooperation between the Government of Vietnam, the Government of Japan and the Government of Korea. This is the second largest key industrial project after Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, acting as one of the important "nuclear" and a promotion for the development of Nghi Son Economic Zone to realize the goal of building Nghi Son into a key economic zone of the country in the coming years.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the project also has a strong influence on the economic development of the North Central region and the whole country, providing electricity for the North Central region and the northern provinces and cities of the country, contributing to completing the goal of firmly ensuring national energy security in the spirit of Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW, dated February 11, 2020 of the Politburo...

The Deputy Prime Minister also requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to direct Vietnam Electricity to create conditions for the plant to operate at maximum capacity, bringing the project into effective operation, contributing to the State budget and local social security.
