Nghi Son Fishermen Join Hands with the Government to Remove the EU "Yellow Card" Warning

Nghi Son, Thanh Hoa – At the closing ceremony on July 15, 2025, for the Third-Class Captain Certificate course for 73 fishermen from Nghi Son Ward, Mr. Michael W. Savidge – Deputy General Director of Nghi Son 2 Power Company Limited (NS2PC) and Director of the Nghi Son 2 Thermal Power Plant – emphasized the vital role of fishermen in supporting the Vietnamese Government’s efforts to remove the “yellow card” warning imposed by the European Commission (EC) for illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

“Though small in form, the Third-Class Captain Certificate carries great significance. It equips fishermen with legal maritime knowledge and the skills to safely operate fishing vessels. More importantly, it reflects their sense of responsibility and commitment to supporting the Government’s determination to remove the IUU yellow card,” Mr. Michael W. Savidge shared at the ceremony.

The training program was held from May 14 to 22, 2025, co-organized by the People’s Committee of Nghi Son Ward, the Border Guard Command of Nghi Son Port, and Thanh Hoa College of Agriculture, with full sponsorship from NS2PC.

On the occasion of Nghi Son Ward’s official establishment on July 1, 2025, Mr. Michael W. Savidge expressed appreciation for the effective collaboration with former Hai Ha Commune and Hai Thuong Ward authorities, and his hope for continued cooperation with the new administration:

Over the years, the strong and responsible partnership between NS2PC and local authorities (Hai Ha Commune and Hai Thuong Ward) has helped build a positive image of ‘Reliable Partner – Responsible Neighbor’.

This collaboration has led to meaningful improvements in the lives of thousands of households – access to clean water, better education support for children, and improved medical facilities at community health stations through NS2PC’s CSR initiatives.

I am confident that the partnership between NS2PC and the new Nghi Son Ward leadership will continue to thrive, writing new golden chapters of mutual commitment so that many more families can benefit from our shared efforts.

🎓 Strengthening Training Toward Sustainable Fisheries

Major Nguyen Van Cuong, Political Officer at the Nghi Son Border Guard Port Command, emphasized:

“In today’s era of international integration, fishing vessel captains not only ensure safety at sea for their crews but also play a vital role in safeguarding national sovereignty over maritime territory.”

He added that authorities would continue to strictly handle violations such as unregistered and unreported vessels or the use of prohibited fishing gear like electric shocks or explosives. Such practices not only breach Vietnamese law but also damage the nation’s credibility in fulfilling international commitments.

Major Nguyen Van Cuong make a speech

Vice Chairman of the Nghi Son Ward People’s Committee, Mr. Nguyen Van Ngo, affirmed that offshore fishing remains the main source of income for local residents. Thanks to NS2PC’s long-standing support, 553 fishermen in the area have now received Third-Class Captain Certificates.

We will continue to work closely with authorities to ensure all fishing boats are properly registered and managed. This not only helps fishermen operate legally and safely but also contributes to the sustainable economic development of our community.”
